New breakthroughs in pipeline leak detection technology fill a domestic gap

On September 1, the "Pipeline Leak Detection Technology Research" project, undertaken by Shengli Oilfield, Zhongyuan Oilfield, Pipeline Transportation and Storage Company, and Beijing Sci-Tech Sansis Company, successfully passed expert appraisal, marking a new breakthrough in China's research on oil and gas pipeline leak detection technology.

  On September 1st, the "Pipeline Leak Detection Technology Research" project, undertaken by Shengli Oilfield, Zhongyuan Oilfield, Pipeline Transportation and Storage Company, and Beijing Sci-Tech Sansis Company, successfully passed expert appraisal, marking a new breakthrough in China's research on oil and gas pipeline leak detection technology. Among them, the subsonic pipeline leak detection technology with independent intellectual property rights fills a domestic gap and achieves an overall international advanced level.

  Leaks in oil and gas pipelines can severely impact the surrounding environment and its ecosystem, causing national property losses, threatening human lives, and directly affecting the safe operation of the oil and gas transportation system. With the continuous improvement of China's oil and gas pipeline network, especially the crisscrossing oil and gas pipeline network in oilfields, there is an urgent need to develop new detection technologies to achieve higher leak detection sensitivity and leak point location accuracy, minimizing the hazards of leakage accidents.

  Since 2007, the "Pipeline Leak Detection Technology Research" project team has successively developed a complete set of oil and gas pipeline leak detection technology and its supporting instruments. The developed subsonic sensor and data acquisition system are characterized by fast response speed and high accuracy of leak detection and alarm. They have been applied to the submarine crude oil and natural gas pipelines of Shengli Oilfield, the crude oil gathering and transportation network of Zhongyuan Oilfield, and the crude oil trunk pipelines of Sinopec Pipeline Transportation and Storage Company. The system positioning error is less than 90 meters, the alarm accuracy is over 95%, and the system operation is stable and reliable.

As is well known, the world is currently facing a battle against climate change, and all countries must bear the responsibility of reducing carbon emissions. In the pipeline industry, there is undoubtedly a need to pay more attention to environmental impact.
